    Tipperary Day Hikes: Slievenamon
OverviewDistance: 6kmTime: 1 - 2 hrs (depending on route and fitness)Parking:Main Car Park: Slievenamon Walk Parking. Room for roughly 6 cars. Make sure to avoid blocking any passing traffic, farm vehicles and livestock.Car Park B: Village ParkingTrail difficulty: Easy - MediumThe route up Slievenamon from the main car park isnt way-marked, but it is clear to follow. The trail is rough and rocky in places, but not overly challenging for a mountain path. Read more about trail grades here.Trail quality: 5/5This isnt a maintained or official trail, so rating it on quality isnt really applicable. However, it is a very nice route, with a bench a short climb up from the start.Views: 5/5Slievenamon is a standalone mountain, and the views you get across the valleys to the Comeraghs, Galtys and Knockmealdowns are great on a clear day. Buggy/Wheelchair friendly: NoThis is an open mountain side, with rough terrain.Dogs allowed: NoThe route up goes through farm land, so its not dog-friendly Slievenamon (721m) is Tipperarys most prominent standalone mountain. An Anglicisation of Sliabh na mBan, it directly translates as "mountain of the women". Personally, Ive always internally translated it as the Womens Mountain. Whatever way your translation falls, the name is most commonly attributed to the folklore stories of Fionn Mac Cumhaill. According to legend, women all across Ireland wanted to win the hand of folklore hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill. To settle who would be his wife, Fionn declared that whoever won a race up to the summit would be his wife. However, we all know that Fionn was in love with Grinne, and he showed her a short-cut, ensuring she would win. Another locally claimed etymology for the name is that, at the right distance and angle, the mountain and surrounding foothills look like a woman lying down. Starting from the small parking area beside the trail head, an info board on the route stands beside the tree-lined track that marks the start. Heading up this loose path, youll come to a set of farm gates (always close behind you), and from there you are onto the open mountain. Making your way onto the open mountain, the trails tracks along the side of some forestry. A short stretch into this climb, youll come to a bench that offers gorgeous views out across the valley towards the Galty Mountains. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize From here the trail steadily climbs up towards the summit. Its a consistent gradient with loose stone underfoot, but the path is very clear to follow. On the summit there are a few different markers - a trig pillar, an ancient burial cairn (with a natural rocky outcrop on its east side forming the appearance of a doorway), and a standing stone with the date 1848 emblazoned in a large black font. The stone marks the 1848 Rebellion, when its said that 50,000 people assembled on the mountainside to hear Thomas Francis Meagher speak before he was exiled for treason. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize From the summit you can see the faraway Waterford coastline glistening on a sunny day. Overall, this is a lovely hike for all levels. Each time Ive visit my family home, Ive walked and run different routes across this mountain, and I know I still have plenty to explore. Its an exposed hill, so be careful in bad weather and bring layers for the summit. If you want to explore more than just the main summit of Slievenamon, there are three other lower peaks surrounding the main mountain; Slievenamon North-West Top; Sheegouna; and Knockahunna. If youre looking for inspiration, this route on Hiiker takes in Slievenamon and Knockahunna in an 11km loop. My personal exploring has so far taken in Sheegouna: Sheegouna is a small prominent point on the shoulder of Slievenamon. Starting off at the main car park, head up the same short lane. On reaching the top of the lane, turn right into the forest, following the old, overgrown trails. Using the edge of the forest as a guide, climb steadily upwards until you reach the far side of the forest. Its then a case of tracking around the side of the mountain, maintaining as level a height as you can as you go. There may be few human trails through this stretch of heather, but there are plenty of winding sheep trails to hop between. This will take you to the shallow saddle between Slievenamon propper, and Knockahunna. Once you start to head in towards this saddle, take a sharp turn south (or left) to head up the side of Slievenamon/Sheegouna. This small summit is a nice addition to climbing the main peak itself. From here I continued on up to the top of Slievenamon, and then down the established route. The total distance of this alternative route is 10km. Hillwalking and Trail Grades in Ireland
As I share more hillwalking routes and hiking trails, having an official route grading system helps to clearly define what kind of terrain you might meet underfoot, how challenging the trail is, and what skills you might need to complete the route. Mountaineering Ireland have set out a grading system to provide a national benchmark for Hillwalking in Ireland. This is the grading system I will be using across Tough Soles, with some additions. Extra info will be given on the breakdown of each trail as to where within each grade a trail or mountain might fall, and I will be using some language put forward by Sport Ireland on Trail Grades, such as their definition of Multi-Access trails. The spectrum of gradingWhile distance is included in the grading system, its not a reliable measure of the level of difficulty. I have done some very short routes that I would list as Strenuous, while some long multi-day trails are definitely easy routes. Grading is a spectrum. Trails wear and change over time, and definitions that were once applicable may get worn away. Hillwalking & Trail GradesThere are 5 grades that I will be using to categorise the hillwalking and trails that are on this website: Multi-AccessEasy ModerateDifficultStrenuous Multi-AccessFlat smooth trails, suitable for all users including people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, people with a vision impairment, using crutches, with a buggy, with small children, older people and so on. Normal outdoor footwear can be worn. For example: Multi-Access Trail at Mullaghmeen Forest, and Belleek Multi-Access Trail. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize EasyThese routes may be signposted trails but will still require some basic navigation skills and walking experience. Mainly on easily identifiable paths, with good underfoot conditions. Can include some open countryside with some rough ground and moderate ascents. For example: The Spinc walk in Glendalough and Diamond Hill in Connemara National ParkTime: 2-5 hours Height gain: 250-500 metres Distance: 5-12km View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize ModerateThese routes include more informal paths, rougher, boggy and more uneven terrain with the possibility of rocky, moderately steep ground. For example: Arderin in the Slieve Blooms, Knockmealdown Mountain in Waterford/Tipperary, and Slieve Binnian in the MournesTime: 5-7 hours Height gain: 500-800 metres Distance: 10-15km DifficultGood hillwalking experience with capable and proven navigational skills in all weather conditions required. Underfoot conditions can be rough and uneven, with the possibility of prolonged rocky, steep sections, and mountain terrain without clear paths. An ability to deal with mountain hazards, steep ground and scree is essential. For example: Carrauntoohil, Mweelrea, LugnaquillaTime: 6-8 hours Height gain: 800-1000 metres Distance: 12-20km View fullsize View fullsize StrenuousA good level of fitness, hillwalking experience and proven navigational skills in all weather conditions are essential requirements, as is an ability to deal with complex mountain terrain including open moorland, mountain plateau, rocks and cliffs without clear paths. There may be some exposure and a need for some basic scrambling skills. Route finding challenging so close attention to navigation is key.For example: Eastern Reeks ridge, Coomloughra Horseshoe in the McGillycuddy ReeksTime: 8-10 hours Height gain: 1000-1500 metres Distance: 12-25km View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize NOTES ON WEATHERThe above grades are all based on the assumption the route can be completed in reasonable weather conditions. Adverse weather and changes in ground conditions can increase the risk and grade of the walk substantially. All the above grades exclude hiking in full winter conditions where very low temperatures and substantial snow and ice may be encountered. The rule of thumb for temperature when in the mountains, is that with every 100m you climb, the temperature decreases by 1C. The Welsh 3000s is one of the most challenging (and rewarding!) mountain hikes in the UK.To complete the Welsh 3000s Challenge, you must summit all 15 of Wales's mountains over 3000 ft within 24 hours, without using any form of transport. This epic adventure covers almost 50km, with well over 3,000m of elevation gained. Impressive! Also known as "The 14 Peaks" (despite there being officially 15 peaks, or possibly 16), this hike tests your endurance, navigation skills, and determination. The term is often associated with the Welsh 3000s Challenge, an endurance hike where participants aim to summit all 15 peaks within 24 hours, covering roughly 24 miles of mountainous terrain, with additional miles for reaching the start and finish points. The Welsh 3000's include well-known mountains such as Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Garnedd Ugain (Crib y Ddysgl), and Crib Goch, each offering unique landscapes and hiking experiences. Each range offers its own unique challenges and breathtaking scenery. The sense of accomplishment upon completing the Welsh 3000s Challenge is unparalleled, as youll have conquered 15 peaks, navigated rugged terrain, and possibly faced the ever-changing Welsh weather. While some dare to complete the challenge in a single push, many choose to spread it over two or three days, allowing more time to appreciate the stunning vistas and enjoy the experience. Get The Log Book (via Amazon) FAQsQ: What is the Welsh 3000s Challenge?A: The Welsh 3000s Challenge involves summiting all 15 mountains in Wales that are over 3000 feet within 24 hours, without using any form of transport. This rigorous hike spans approximately 24 miles, but with the additional walks to the start point and down from the finish point, it can extend to over 30 miles.Q: Is the Welsh 3000s harder than the 3 Peaks?A: The Welsh 3000s Challenge is often considered more difficult than the National 3 Peaks Challenge. While the 3 Peaks involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon) within 24 hours, the Welsh 3000s requires summiting 15 peaks all within one continuous stretch, covering rugged terrain with significant elevation changes. The lack of transport between the peaks and the technical aspects of the route make the Welsh 3000s a more demanding adventure.Q: What are the 3000 mountains in Wales?A: The 3000 mountains in Wales, also known as the Welsh 3000s, include the following peaks: Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Garnedd Ugain (Crib y Ddysgl), Crib Goch, Elidir Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach, Tryfan, Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen - 962 m, Foel Grach, Garnedd Uchaf (Carnedd Gwenllian) and Foel-fras.Q: How do you prepare for the Welsh 3000s?A: Preparing for the Welsh 3000s Challenge requires both physical and logistical planning:Fitness Training: Build your endurance with regular long-distance hikes, preferably in mountainous terrain. Incorporate strength training, focusing on legs and core, to handle the steep ascents and descents.Navigation Skills: Familiarise yourself with map reading and using a compass. The terrain can be challenging, and weather conditions can change rapidly, making good navigation skills crucial.Gear Preparation: Invest in sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and a reliable backpack. Essential items include a map, compass, GPS device, first aid kit, headlamp, and plenty of food and water.Route Planning: Study the route in detail, noting the starting and finishing points, and the locations of each peak. Consider scouting parts of the route beforehand to get a feel for the terrain.Weather Awareness: Check the weather forecast leading up to your hike and be prepared for sudden changes. Dress in layers and pack waterproof clothing to stay dry.Support and Safety: Inform someone about your plans and expected return time. Consider doing the challenge with a partner or group for added safety and support.By adequately preparing, you can enhance your chances of successfully completing this demanding and rewarding challenge.Q: What is the record time for completing the Welsh 3000s?A: The record time for completing the Welsh 3000s Challenge is an impressive 4 hours and 19 minutes, set by Colin Donnelly in 1988. This astonishing feat showcases the level of endurance and speed required to tackle the challenge in record time.Q: Whats the best time of year to attempt the Welsh 3000s Challenge?A: The best time to attempt the challenge is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September). The weather is more stable, and the days are longer, giving you more daylight to complete the hike.Q: Do I need any special equipment?A: Yes, you should be equipped with sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, a map and compass, and plenty of food and water. A GPS device and a first aid kit are also highly recommended.Q: Is it necessary to be an experienced hiker to complete the challenge?A: While not strictly necessary, its highly advisable to have some mountain hiking experience. The challenge involves steep ascents, descents, and potentially hazardous weather conditions.Q: Can the challenge be done in sections?A: Absolutely. Many people choose to break the challenge into smaller sections over a few days to better enjoy the experience and reduce the physical strain.Q: How long does it take to complete the Welsh 3000s?A: Completing the challenge in one go typically takes between 12 to 24 hours, depending on fitness levels and weather conditions. When done over several days, the time can vary significantly.Q: Are there guided tours available?A: Yes, there are several companies that offer guided tours of the Welsh 3000s. These can be a great option if youre new to mountain hiking or prefer the security of a knowledgeable guide. Taking on the Welsh 3000s is a remarkable adventure that promises not just physical challenge but also a deep connection with the wild beauty of Wales.Whether youre chasing the thrill of the 24-hour challenge or spreading the experience over a few days, the Welsh 3000s will leave you with unforgettable memories and a profound sense of achievement.Ready to lace up your boots and start planning?
